How to Make Home Made Ginger Beer
The process of making home made ginger beer is really not that difficult, and in fact anyone can do it. Many people make the mistake of thinking that ginger beer is exactly like regular beer but this is actually not true at all. In fact, ginger beer is completely nonalcoholic and so everyone can drink it, even children.
Anyone who is interested in making home made ginger beer should know that the process involved is actually quite quick and simple, and definitely a lot of fun. Although there are a few different home made ginger beer recipes that can be followed, there are a few in particular that are especially popular.
Tools and Ingredients
Anyone planning to make their own home made ginger beer is going to need to supply themselves with the proper tools and ingredients. For the most basic ginger beer one will need eight pint bottles or four quart bottles, and bowls to make the mixture in.
Basic Recipe
For the most basic home made ginger beer, the required ingredients are as follows: 2 oz. fresh ginger, 2 lemons, 1 tsp. cream of tartar, 1 lb. sugar, 1 gallon boiling water, and 1 oz. yeast. Preparation is simple, and should be started by roughly crushing the ginger root. Then the lemons will need to be washed and sliced into thick rings, and the ginger, lemon, cream of tartar and sugar mixed in a large bowl.
Now the boiling water must be poured over top, and the mixture stirred and left to cool to lukewarm temperature. Stir in the yeast, and then leave this to ferment for about a day. The yeast will then need to be skimmed off and the mixture strained and bottled.
Remember
There are a few things that should be kept in mind by anyone making their own ginger beer at home. One is that bottling ginger beer in glass bottles is not recommended, because ginger beer tends to be a very aggressive fermenter, one that produces high pressure quite rapidly. Another tip is to never leave the finished ginger beer in a warm place any longer than it takes for the bottle to feel hard, because this can result in generating enough pressure to explode the bottle.
Making ginger beer can be more than fun, it can even be financially rewarding, as one can produce enough ginger beer that they can begin selling it. Otherwise it can be given out as a gift to family and friends.
