Maintaining Copyright Integrity Of Discount Audio Books
It has often been noted that you get what you pay for and the same can be said about discount audio books. Although many resources offer quality digital recordings of many great works of literature, there may be some limitations placed on the use of the files. File sharing laws have been the main focus of the music industry, but many authors and book publishers are beginning to complain about the use of audio files, especially among sellers of discount audio books.
In a majority of cases, when an audio book is downloaded it can be transferred to another media playing device for use outside the home. Transferring digital files to a compact disc or other portable digital storage device is expected when someone purchases discount audio books. They probably intend to listen to the book while traveling or lying in bed and have no interest in having to sit in front of their computer to listen to their latest acquisition.
One of the arguments presented by buyers of discount audio books is that they see it as the same as buying a book and passing it around to their friends. Most copyright owners do not necessarily have a problem with that concept, but complain about the file being recorded on several different devices for sharing or potential resell.
License Agreement Outlines Acceptable Use
With most downloads of discount audio books a license agreement stipulates how the file can be used. Typically, the file is allowed to be saved to one or more devices within the control of the person making the purchase. It will usually prohibit the file from being recorded to another device for selling or giving to another person as a mean of protecting the rights of the holder of the copyright.
Unfortunately, there are those who will download the file, make numerous copies and attempt to sell the discount audio books to others. While some of the files may have expired copyrights and have become public domain, many others are still protected by copyright law. Persons who distribute the files without the consent of the owner may be in violation of federal as well as international law.
When a person buys or accepts the file of discount audio books it is best to carefully read the accompanying license agreement to insure they are in compliance with all applicable laws. Maintaining the trust of file sharing should be important to everyone who buys and distributes digital files, even if they are of discount audio books.
